In July 1945, as World War II nears its conclusion, Japan is compelled to consider the Potsdam Declaration. Despite prolonged cabinet discussions, a resolution remains elusive. The United States drops atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. General Korechika Anami struggles with making the right choice, while the Japanese Emperor is concerned for his citizens. Prime Minister Kantaro Suzuki presides over the cabinet meetings, with Chief Secretary Hisatsune Sakomizu observing helplessly. Meanwhile, Major Kenji Hatanaka and other young officers, opposed to Japan’s surrender, attempt to seize control of the palace and a radio station. The station is scheduled to air Emperor Hirohito’s reading of the Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War.
